how distance is calculated in olden days

Modern day measurement units are Miles, Kilometers, Meters, Centimeters, etc. Let’s see how people used to measure in olden days.

3 Bethalu = 1 Jenna
2 Jenna = 1 Moora
2 Morra = 1 Gajam [1 Gajam = 3 Adugulu (Feets) / 1 adugu = 12 Angulalu (Inches)]
2 Gajam = 1 Bara
2 Bara = 1 Dandamu
1000 Dandamu = 1 Krosu
5 Krosu = 1 Yojana / 1 Amada [1 Yojana = 9.09 Miles / 14.62894 Kilometers]

In Ethihasa we find distances mentioned in above-mentioned units.
Example 1: Hanuma in Ramayana is said to have crossed 100 Yojana Sea to reach Lanka, which means 1462 Kilometers in the present day.
Example 2: Hanuma describes Lord Rama as 4 Moora tall man, to win her trust. Which means 8 feet’s (1 Angulam (Inch). Olden days an Inch is 3/4th of present day Inch, it means Inch then was smaller than today.
Vishnu Purana has many such astonishing measurement units discussed. Atoms size is also described in it.
1 Paramanu = 1 Anuvu
1 Parasukshma = 10 Paramanu
1 Trasarenu = 10 Parasukshma
1 Mahiraja (dust particle) = 10 Trasarenu
1 Balagra (hair end) = 10 Mahiraja
1 Liksha = 10 Balagra
1 Yuka = 10 Liksha
1 Yavodara = 10 Yuka
1 Yava = 10 Yavodara
1 Angula = 10 Yava
1 Pada = 6 Angula
1 Vithasthi = 2 Pada
1 Hasta = 2 Vithasthi
1 Dhanu = 4 Hasta
1 Gavyathi = 2000 Dhanu
1 Yojana = 4 Gavyathi
1 Danda = 2 Narika = 6 Adugulu (1.8 Meters)
Olden days 1 Inch is 3/4th of present day Inch, it means Inch then was smaller than today.
Our ancestors measured Hair width, dust particle size, even atoms, that is such a wonderful feat considering the time period. We have to spread this knowledge to present generation.
Hereafter when you read or listen to Puranas, Itihasa we hope if you come across these terms it’ll be easy for you to understand.
Our efforts are to explore the scientific angle of our culture and scriptures.
